Villagers and a provincial governor reported an "unknown object" exploded and crashed into a mountainside in northwest Iran, state television reported this afternoon.

"This object, which was like a rocket, crashed near the village of Ghatar," television quoted the governor of the town of Miandoab as saying.

It reported villagers said the object, which looked like a small aeroplane, had exploded and then ploughed into Kalan-kuh mountain.

Police officials in northwest Iran were not immediately available for comment.
