Ireland's under-21's lost their opening pool match in the U-21 Rugby World Cup, going down to the defending champions South Africa in Oxford this afternoon.

Michael Bradley's side launched a spirited second-half comeback after going into the interval 26-12 behind. However, despite bridging the gap to 29-27 with just minutes remaining, Ireland conceded a breakaway injury-time try as the Springboks sealed the win.

Ireland face Scotland on Tuesday before their final group game against Argentina a week tomorrow.
