British transsexual Ms Christine Goodwin today won her battle in the European Court of

Human Rights to be recognised as a woman.

The judgment delivered in Strasbourg unanimously held that the UK's failure to recognise her new identity in law breached her rights to respect for private life and her right to marry under the European Convention on Human Rights.

Former bus driver Ms Goodwin (64), who has lived full time as a woman since 1984 and had irreversible gender reassignment surgery in 1990, was awarded €23,000 for costs and expenses.
