Two men accused of conspiracy to commit murder were remanded in custody when they appeared in a Belfast court today.

Daryl James Coulter, 22, from Ballysillan Crescent, and Henry Neil Smyth, 27, from Mournebeg Drive in Rathcoole, both in Belfast, were charged with conspiring to commit murder and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

A detective constable told Belfast Magistrates' Court that he believed he could connect both men with the charges.

He said both men were alleged to have been on a motorbike on the Ballysillan Road on Thursday morning when they were stopped by police and arrested.

Two automatic pistols were recovered nearby.

The officer said that, when charged, both men replied "No" to both charges.

He added: "We would believe there was a conspiracy to commit a murder of a person or persons unknown."

The men were remanded in custody to appear in court again via video link on January 10, 2003.

The men's solicitor said they would to the High Court for bail before that date.
