It is understood that Mark Ferguson (24), from Rathkip, Ballina, Co Mayo, died as a result of a fall from a balcony. Mr Ferguson had travelled to Barcelona with friends for a music festival at the weekend.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the man’s family in Ballina and are providing consular assistance.

A postmortem was to have been held in Barcelona yesterday. The body is not expected to be repatriated for several days.

Mr Ferguson’s parents, John and Kathleen, have five other children. Local Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary said last evening the thoughts of the Ballina community were with the Ferguson family.

Meanwhile, a Donegal man has been killed in a crash near Perth, Western Australia.

Tomás Maguire (24) had emigrated from Ardara to Australia in February. He died when a pick-up truck he was driving rolled over in Wickepin, about 214km southeast of Perth, at about 8am on Monday.

A spokesman for The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it was aware of the incident and that consular assistance was being provided to the family, who were notified of the tragedy by gardaí yesterday.

Members of the family were last night preparing to fly to Perth.
