In Co Donegal an 88-year-old woman died when she was knocked down near Ballybofey at 6.40pm.

Ellen Doherty, from Derry Road, Strabane, Co Tyrone, had been leaving a floral tribute for painter John Barr, also from Strabane, who died in a motorcycle accident there on Sunday night.

Her husband Lawrence, who was with her at the time last night, was injured and needed hospital treatment.

The 15-year-old boy who died in a two-car crash on the M1 motorway in north Dublin yesterday was named by gardai today as Edward Cash of Corduff Cottages, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15.

The occupants of the second car, a man and a woman, were hurt and taken to Beaumont Hospital. However, their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Co Mayo have appealed for witnesses to a fatal crash at Drumlong, Newport, last Sunday morning to contact them. An 80-year-old woman died and four other people were injured in the two-car collision, which happened at 11.45 am.

So far this year 184 people have died on the State's roads.
