Police in north Belfast arrested two men early this morning after a riot involving two rival groups.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland was called to the Ardoyne Road area shortly after 12.30am after reports that petrol bombs were being thrown by two small groups of people.

However, the PSNI said today that no evidence of petrol bombs was found at the scene. Police used vehicles to separate the groups before local representatives helped to calm the sitatuion.

A PSNI spokesman said the situation was brought under control by about 2.30am.

There were reports that paint was thrown through the window of one house on the Ardoyne Road during the disturbances.

One man in his late teens was charged this morning with riotous disorder. A second man was later released on police bail pending further inquiries, a spokesman said.
