The surprise winner of this year's Turner Prize for contemporary art, announced at a ceremony at the Tate Gallery, London, on Thursday night, was Glasgow born Douglas Gordon (30). Gordon was the 4/1 outsider for the prize, lagging well behind the local favourite, painter Gary Hume.

Gordon, the youngest artist on the shortlist, studied at the Glasgow School of Art and the Slade School in London. He has in the past worked with text, paint and performance, but is best known for his use of film and video. His video works often involve what the artist calls "re representations", in which wellknown cinema and television images become the core images.
