TEXAS – Tornadoes touched down in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area yesterday, tossing lorries into the air and grounding all aircraft in the region.
A spokesman for Dallas/Fort Worth airport said officials were trying to protect passengers from breaking windows by moving them into stairwells and toilets.
WFAA television in Dallas said a violent tornado swept across southern Dallas County yesterday, damaging homes and downing trees in its path.
CNN showed footage of a residential neighbourhood in Dallas County where many homes suffered serious structural damage – some were missing their roofs or second floors, and other buildings had been reduced to rubble.
The twister touched down at around 1pm local time, about 20 miles south of Dallas. There were no immediate reports of injuries. – (Reuters)
