London - Crime in Britain has risen for the first time in six years, officials said yesterday, reporting an overall increase of 2.2 per cent and a 6 per cent rise in violent crime.

The Home Secretary, Mr Jack Straw, said the figures presented a "mixed picture" and if one took the longer view, going back to 1997, crime was down 7 per cent.
