Lisbon - East Timorese activist Mr Xanana Gusmao, serving a 20-year jail term, was taken to a private clinic in Jakarta on Monday for kidney treatment, said a fellow activist, Mr Jose Ramos-Horta, yesterday.

"Commander Xanana suffers from kidney problems, and he refused to allow Indonesian police doctors to treat him," a local news agency quoted Mr Ramos-Horta, a nobel peace prize winner, as saying.
