Seventeen more people were killed in factional fighting in the Somali capital today, bringing the death toll from two days of violence to 30, witnesses said.

The fighting, in the Medina area of southwestern Mogadishu, pits militiamen loyal to warlord Musa Sudi Yalahow against those supporting his former ally Omar Mohamud Mohamed, better known as "Finish".

Sporadic gunfire could be heard in the area overnight, but fighting intensified again this morning.

The fighting first erupted yesterday, but died down late in the afternoon before resuming this morning.
