A third child has died after a road crash in Co Monaghan today.

A third child has died after a road crash in Co Monaghan today.

The four-year-old girl died from her injuries in Monaghan General Hospital this evening.

Her 13-year-old male cousin and 14-year-old aunt died earlier after a collision between a car and a lorry on the main Monaghan/Cootehill Road near Swanscross at 1.20 p.m.

The girl’s mother and eight-year-old brother are being treated in Monaghan general hospital and their condition is described as critical.

The driver of the car, the girl’s father, is still in hospital but his injuries are not believed to be serious. His eight-month-old daughter survived the crash without injury.

A garda spokesman said the relatives were believed to have been going on holidays together.

The driver of the lorry also escaped uninjured but was treated in hospital for shock. The spokesman said he is very upset and shaken.
