Ten people were in custody at various Garda stations across Munster last night as part of a major crackdown on an organised criminal gang involved in burglaries and smuggling stolen property abroad.

Up to 100 gardaí, including the Regional Support Unit and the National Bureau for Criminal Investigation were involved in the operation which saw more than €150,000 seized and a number of bank accounts frozen.

The men in custody are ranging in ages from 20s to mid-40s are being detained at Garda stations at Henry Street, Roxboro and Bruff in Limerick, and at Shannon, Mallow, Nenagh, Clonmel and Dungarvan. They are being held under Section 50 of the new Criminal Justice Act and can be held for up to seven days without charge.
