Björk: Biophilia

Remember Björk? Icelandic, quirky, prone to dressing up in strange outfits? These days she has her very own app. And as you’d expect, it’s not just any old app: it’s a beautiful multimedia experience that brings music, technology and art together.

To really understand Biophilia, you have to experience for yourself. The basic app, showing the interactive music universe, is free. But 10 in-app sections are being released one at a time for purchase. The apps are featured on a 3D map of the musical universe that can navigated around by swiping. Each features a song by Björk, and contains its own unique way of showcasing the track. Crystallineis already available, which uses a game in which you collect crystals in tunnels to teach about song structure. Later releases include Sacrifice, which provides a sound writer app, and Virus, which is part musical instrument, part sonic artwork and part educational animation. It's more fun than it sounds and is certainly a different way to show off music.
