COLOMBO - An attack on two strategic Sri Lanka government military bases yesterday by Tamil Tiger rebels left nearly 750 combatants on both sides dead or wounded, government officials said.

Hundreds of rebels from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam breached army defences at the Paranthan and Elephant Pass camps in the north of the country. The pre dawn raid led to an 11 hour battle, officials said.
