A Taiwanese TV station has apologised after a newsreader mimicked the emotional tone of the North Korean anchorwoman who made the grief-stricken announcement of the death of Kim Jong Il.

The Chinese Television System said a news manager will resign following the over-the-top performance by news reader Liang Fang-yu.

Dressed in traditional Korean clothes and identifying herself by a Korean name, Ms Liang reported on Taiwan's presidential election campaign employing the grave tone of North Korean anchorwoman Ri Chun Hee. She appeared wearing a hanbok, or Korean traditional costume, and mimicked Ms Ri's tearful voice and exaggerated gestures.

The 68-year-old Ms Ri, her country’s top anchor for three decades, announced Kim’s death earlier in the day, her voice at times seeming to choke with emotion.

CTS has now transferred Ms Liang and the show’s producer to another department. A spokesman of the National Communications Commission also said that her actions were “extremely awful and inappropriate.”
