A Dublin student who rammed a pint glass into a man's face after pestering his girlfriend in a pub has been given a three years' suspended jail sentence by Judge Desmond Hogan.

Eddie Furey (20), of The Grove, Kingswood Heights, Tallaght, jumped on the lap of Mr Ronan Flanagan's girlfriend and tried to kiss her before slashing Mr Flanagan's face. The attack happened in the Earl of Kildare Hotel in Dublin city centre.

Mr Flanagan received 20 stitches to his face.

At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Furey pleaded guilty to recklessly causing serious harm to Mr Flanagan on October 18th, 1998.

Mr Richard Kean SC, defending, said Furey came from a well-known musical family. He said Furey deeply regretted his dreadful attack on the victim and offered £5,000 compensation to Mr Flanagan as a token of his remorse.
