Suspected Muslim militants shot dead 11 Muslim civilians, including eight children, in southern Kashmir.

The killings took place in Salva village in the Mendhar area of southern Poonch district, 150 miles northwest of the Kashmiri winter capital, Jammu.

According to a police statement issued in Kashmir's summer capital, Srinagar, the suspected militants broke into three homes and shot dead residents in each house. Eleven people died and three were injured.

Mr B K Kundal, deputy superintendent in the Jammu police control room, said the motive for the killings was unclear, although militants have in the past targeted the families of Muslims who they suspect of acting as informants for the security forces in Kashmir.
