A security alert on the outskirts of Dungiven, Co Derry was called off yesterday after an explosion, initially thought to have been a bomb, was found to have been caused by a fire cracker.

The alert started on Saturday evening when a motorist reported a flash followed by the sound of an explosion as he travelled along the Foreglen Road. His car, an Audi, has tinted windows and the RUC initially thought the vehicle had been mistaken for a police car.

The main Derry to Belfast road was closed for several hours yesterday as a result of the alert.
