A man arrested in Belfast yesterday in connection with another shooting in the feud between loyalist gangs has been released without charge.

He was one of four people held in connection with the ambush on a man regarded as a senior figure in the Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF).

The victim was hit a number of times by shots and sustained a wound to the chest after the attack early yesterday morning in the Glenside Park area off the Crumlin Road.

A hand gun was recovered, and the victim was taken to the nearby Mater Hospital in north Belfast for emergency surgery.

The man released overnight was one of four people arrested after three police raids in and around Belfast following the attack.

He was one of two men held on suspicion of attempted murder. Two others arrested yesterday are being held under the Terrorism Act.

The gun attack is the latest in a vicious turf war between the LVF and the rival Ulster Volunteer Force. Three men have been shot dead since the power-struggle over drugs and racketeering re-erupted last month.

Yesetrday's shooting happened after LVF men went into the Glenside but according to loyalist sources were thwarted in their attack by UVF members who opened fire first.

After the victim was brought to the Mater a crowd of up to 20 loyalists gathered outside but were held back by police. A worker at the hospital said a crowd wearing scarves over their faces attempted to gain entry to the hospital as she was sent in to work.

The victim was later transferred across Belfast to the Royal Victoria Hospital where his condition was described as serious.

"Whether these men were his friends or the ones who shot him I'm not sure. But when the ambulance left here to take him to the Royal they stood across the road cheering," the worker said.
