A man suspected of killing four people in the US states of Georgia and then kidnapping two of his daughters and a stepdaughter has shot himself after a day-long manhunt last night, police said.

A police spokesman said Jerry William Jones, (31) who is suspected of shooting to death his ex-wife's parents and sister and strangling a baby, was caught after crashing his vehicle near Tennessee and wounding himself.

"The girls [his daughters] are OK, although they may have minor injuries, and the suspect had a self-inflicted gunshot wound," said the spokesman.

He said a murder warrant had been issued for Mr Jones after the four bodies were discovered late on Wednesday in Ranger, Georgia - about 60 miles north of Atlanta.

Authorities had issued a nationwide "Amber Alert" to motorists on major highways throughout the United States to watch for Mr Jones, who was driving a sports utility vehicle.

State police found Mr Jones heading north on Interstate 75 near the Georgia-Tennessee state line after a caller identified his vehicle, and a car chase followed.

Mr Harris said Mr Jones, who was taken to a Tennessee hospital, would be charged with murder. He had no word on Mr Jones's condition.
