The Ann Summers "absolutely-not-a-sex-shop", which has been ordered by Dublin Corporation to cease trading in its present position opposite the GPO in O'Connell Street, says demand for its products saw 9,000 customers visit the shop last Saturday.

The demand is such that the group, which has already been in the State for 10 years through its all-women party plan system, is looking for additional premises in the Republic.

The group, however, has not taken over a two-shop and four-storey house which was recently sold at Castle Street, Dalkey.

Locals expressed concern when the premises was sold recently and a sign "Acquired by Ann Summers" was posted briefly on the building.

"No, it's a wind-up," said PR spokesman Mr Paul Allen. "Ann Summers is looking at other high street locations but they would be Cork or Galway, not the quiet environs of Dalkey."

Mr Allen did add that the group was very pleased with the sales at its Irish store, pointing out that some lines had run out at the weekend and that more stock was being brought in.

"There were people queuing out on the street to get into the store; the store is obviously very successful and the Ann Summers organisation is very pleased," he said.
