Sudan has accused the rebel Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA) of breaching a ceasefire agreement by shelling a major southern town, wounding two civilians, the Sudanese News Agency SUNA reported today.
The rebel movement released two Katyusha rockets on Wau without any specific target, the agency said, adding a woman and her child were hurt in the attack.
Presidential advisor on peace affairs, Mr Ghazi Salah al-Din, accused the southern rebel movement of targeting civilians.
"This is the first breach by the rebel movement of the agreement for the protection of civilians," SUNA quoted him as saying.
Under US mediation, the Sudanese government and the SPLA agreed earlier this year to protect civilians and civilian targets in the 19-year-old civil war in Africa's largest country.
Wau, 950 km southwest of Khartoum and southern Sudan's second largest town, was attacked by the SPLA in 1998 but remained in government hands.
