A student in Britain saved his own life by ringing 999 on his mobile phone after becoming impaled on railings in Manchester.

Mr Jamie Collings (19) slipped as he tried to take a short cut by climbing over a 7-foot fence.

Three four-inch spikes pierced his legs and stomach - leaving him dangling upside down with blood flowing from his wounds.

As shock set in he managed to ring for help and give details of his whereabouts.

Firemen cut him free and took him to hospital where the spikes were removed during a five-hour operation.

Rescuer Mr Paul Vester said: "It was amazing he could talk. The mobile saved his life." PA
