Real Madrid striker Raul faces a UEFA disciplinary charge following his controversial goal in Leeds' Champions League defeat at the Bernabeu.

The Spanish international appeared to deliberately steer the ball past Nigel Martyn with his hand and referee Riszard Woljic personally apologised to the entire Leeds team for failing to spot the incident following the match.

A UEFA spokesman said: "We will be taking action against Real Madrid striker Raul.

"The disciplinary committee have confirmed they have opened the case against him and action will be taken."

However, UEFA will only have recourse to fine Raul and do not have the power of a Champions League suspension at their discretion.

The spokesman added: "I don't think the disciplinary committee will ban Raul for the use of his hand but a fine may be applied.

Leeds United manager David O'Leary praised referee Woljic for his actions.
