The belated St Patrick's Day festival, cancelled because of foot-and-mouth, will go ahead on May 18th to 20th, it was confirmed today.

The Minister for Agriculture, Mr Joe Walsh, accepted the advice of the Expert Group on Foot and Mouth Disease Control that the festival could be rescheduled for May.

Festival chief executive Ms Maria Moynihan said the rescheduled events could spearhead the Bord Fáilte Tourism Reassurance campaign.

"What better way to spread the message that Ireland is open for business than with living proof in the form of images of people in glorious costumes dancing in the streets," she said.

The programme of events will be announced on April 20th.
