January 6th, when Nollaig na mBan traditionally marked women's Christmas, would seem to be a suitable date for having a national ladies' day, the leader of the House, Mr Donie Cassidy, said.

He was responding to Opposition calls for an early debate on a motion seeking recognition of the contribution of women to the economy by creating a national paid holiday on St Brigid's day, February 1st.
