Tottenham 2 Southampton 0
Late goals by Christian Ziege and Simon Davies gave Tottenham Hotspur a 2-0 home win over Southampton this afternoon, their first Premiership win of the season.
Ziege struck after 76 minutes and Davies added the second three minutes from time to lift Glen Hoddle’s side to five points. It was a huge disappointment for Southampton, who created several good chances in an open, attacking match but remain without a goal or a point after three games, all three ending in 2-0 defeats.
Dean Richards, the Southampton defender wanted by current Spurs and former Southampton manager Glenn Hoddle, had a superb game at the back and almost opened the scoring with a thunderous header that was well saved by Neil Sullivan in the 15th minute.
Southampton continued to look lively but had a narrow escape after half an hour when Les Ferdinand hit the bar for Spurs with a clever volley.
Both sides continued to probe after the break with Spurs looking the more dangerous and they finally made the breakthrough when Davies fed Ziege with a great pass and the German wing back cut in from the left and finished superbly with the outside of his left foot.
Davies made the game safe with another confident low finish after being set up by a deft touch from Teddy Sheringham. Charlton Athletic host Fulham later today in the last league game of the weekend.
