GOVERNMENT CHIEF Whip Paul Kehoe has defended his criticism on the social networking site Twitter of Sinn Féin presidential hopeful Martin McGuinness.

Mr Keogh controversially tweeted: “I wouldn’t trust Martin McGuinness to take my dog for a walk”, and followed that up with a second comment through his Twitter account: “Why would you need your salary when you have the proceeds of the Northern Bank at your disposal”.

When asked at an engagement in Co Roscommon yesterday if he stood by the tweets, Mr Kehoe said: “I believe that any person that is elected, or a public representative, should be able to make comments and should be able to question people’s capabilities and where they are coming from when they are standing for the highest office in the land.”

“I believe that we have to be extremely careful, extremely careful about who we are going to elect into this office,” he added.
