A small explosion in the back garden of a house in the Oldpark area of north Belfast caused scorch damage to a gate and footpath yesterday afternoon. Police removed the remains of the device for forensic examination. An RUC spokesman said there was no evidence at this stage to suggest a sectarian motive.

The Sinn Fein Assembly member for North Belfast, Mr Gerry Kelly, described the attack as "another attempt at mass murder".
