Sligo’s Gaelic footballers came to Croke Park this afternoon as rank outsiders and, for the second time in a year, pulled off a famous victory.
A wonderful opportunist goal from Dessie Sloyan in the 62nd minute sealed a sensational win in this afternoon’s All-Ireland qualifier against Tyrone.
The teams were tied at 12 points each when a long Paul Durcan point-attempt rebounded off the right-hand post, and Sloyan reacted quicker than any of the Ulster men to gather the dropping ball and hammer it into the top of the net.
That goal injected extra energy into the Connacht men on a sweltering day at headquarters, and they notched another two points in the remaining minutes to run out comfortable victors, 1-14 to 0-12.
