Sixteen people were murdered by an armed group overnight near Khemis Miliana, 120 kilometers west of Algiers.

The 16 were "assassinated in cowardly fashion by a terrorist group" on the Sidi Lakdhar road, Algerian security services said.

The Armed Islamic Group led by Antar Zouabri is active in the Sidi Lakdhar region.

More than 130 people have been killed by suspected militant Islamists across the country since the beginning of June.

They included some 40 members of Algeria's security forces.
