Sinn Féin TD Mr Caoimhghin O Caolain, called today for the closure of the Sellafield nuclear waste disposal plant in Cumbria in Britain.
Mr O Caolain told a CND conference in Britain that Sellafield is an "immediate danger to all the people of Ireland and Britain - a potential Chernobyl in our midst."
He claimed that demand for the closure of Sellafield was growing as people realised the threat posed by an attack on the plant "similar to that in the United States on September 11."
Mr O Caolain said that even if September 11 had never happened, Sellafield should still be closed down. "This plant endangers the lives of people in Britain as much as in Ireland," he said.
