Freetown - Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo told Sierra Leone yesterday that a negotiated end to its civil war was in sight and assured its people that Nigeria would keep its troops there as peacekeepers. He was speaking during a flying visit one day after visiting UN Human Rights Commissioner Mrs Mary Robinson denounced abuses in Sierra Leone's war as worse than those in Kosovo.

Mrs Robinson said the international community would not tolerate the level of abuses perpetrated in Sierra Leone. "Women and children have been the most grievous victims of human rights abuses in Sierra Leone," she said. "The situation in Sierra Leone is worse than Kosovo."
