A Limerick family with four young children had a lucky escape early yesterday morning when a gunman targeted their home in the third shooting in the city in as many days.

The attack took place in Moyross just hours after the state regeneration agencies set up to tackle crime and social problems in parts of Limerick announced details of their plans.

A gunman fired a single shot through a downstairs window of the house in Sarsfield Gardens, Moyross, at 1.15am. Nobody was injured in the attack, although family members were in the house at the time.

Gardaí investigating the shooting were last night still trying to establish whether or not it was feud-related.

They were also checking if it might be linked to a shooting in Moyross last Sunday morning. Two shots were fired into a house in the Delmege Park area of Moyross at 4am on Sunday.

The front door of the house was damaged and the front sitting room window was smashed in the attack.

Less than an hour later, at 4.45am, a number of shots were fired through the front window of a house at Lenihan Avenue in the Ballinacurra Weston area of Limerick.

Nobody was injured in either incident.

It is believed shotguns were used in all of the gun attacks, including the latest incident yesterday morning.

It took place the day after plans to transform the Moyross housing estate were announced.

On Monday, Brendan Kenny, the chief executive of the two Limerick regeneration boards, said "crime cannot be allowed to fester".

He added: "We cannot allow a small number of families and criminal people to dictate the whole area.

"We want to change the environment to make it easier for the police authorities to do their job," said Mr Kenny.
