Gardaí are searching for four armed raiders who ran over a man, breaking his leg, during a robbery in Co Monaghan this morning.

The owner of a supermarket and service station in Cloughballey walked in on three of the raiders as they tried to steal cigarettes and cash at 4.10 a.m. They were armed with a firearm, a slash hook and an iron bar.

A shot was fired as the raiders escaped in a silver Mitsubishi Galant with an amount of cash.

The owner was run over by the car as it drove off. He was taken to Louth general hospital where he was treated for a broken leg.

The gang headed off in the direction of the Dundalk/Carrickmacross road and a Garda search is continuing.
