Ireland are on the verge of their first medal at the Paralympics in Beijing with Gay Shelly making it to the semi-finals of the individual boccia competition today.

Bobbie Connolly and Tom Leahy failed to progress beyond the pool stages in the BC2 class while Padraic Connolly was denied by a centimetre in a quarter final tie break against hometown favourite Yi Wang.

"Obviously I'm disappointed not to have progressed but to get to the quarter-finals in my first Paralympics is a massive achievement. I tried everything; it was only a fraction in the tie break," Moran said afterwards.

With the team event still to come, the 24-year-old remained optimistic: "I'll be back, and in London in 2012. It's time to move on and focus on the team event as that's the most important thing now."

Elsewhere, Irish records went tumbling in the Laoshan Veledrome, as both Irish cyclists in action set new records in their respective events.

Dubliner Cathal Miller stripped seven seconds off the national best in the 4-kilometre individual pursuit to finish fifth. While in the Men's 1-kilometre time trial final, Michael Delaney and pilot David Peelo set a new Irish record at 1.08.593, as they came in 10th.

All four Irish bikes in action in Beijing have broken an Irish record with several events still to come.

In 7-a-side soccer, the world number two team, beat Ireland 4-2 in front of a crowd of 5,000. Finbarr O'Riordan and Joseph James Markey were on the mark for the Irish who face world and Paralympic champions Ukraine on Wednesday.

Discus thrower Garrett Culliton from Laois was Ireland's first track and field athlete in the Bird's Nest in this competition and he marked the ocassion with a new Irish record, with a throw of 17.79 metres, plus a berth in the final.

"I suppose I can't ask for any more than a PB; that's what you try and go out to do in every event. I had six throws over 17 metres so it was quite a good series," he said afterwards.

Offaly's Eoin Cleare was Ireland's other field athlete in competition tonight in the final of the F32 Shot Putt, where he finished seventh with his best throw of 6.11 metres.

Eilish Byrne, Ireland's only representative at the Equestrian events in Hong Kong, finished 11th in the Dressage event in the Individual Championship Test Grade II aboard her 12 year-old Dutch-bred gelding Youri.

Table tennis player Kathleen Reynolds saw her first action of these Paralympics at the Peking University Gym, against Qian Li of China in the Ladies Class 3 event. She lost 3-1 and is back this morning against Hyun-Ja Choi of Korea.

Her colleague Eimear Breathnach went down 3-1 to Italy's Pamela Pezzutto, failing to progress to the knock-out stages. She will compete again in the team event later this week.
