Sinn Fein in Kerry North is being asked by Kerry County Council to remove a series of posters erected to commemorate the deaths of the 1981 hunger strikers. Politicians from other parties have also called for the removal of the posters.

But while Sinn Fein has removed those posters placed on public property, it says it wishes to retain a number of large-scale billboards on private land until the anniversary of the date of the last hunger striker's death in October.

Mr Martin Ferris, North Kerry councillor and general election candidate for Sinn Fein, said nobody had complained to him about them, and an anonymous complaint to Kerry County Council in the last week may have been politically motivated.

Cllr John Brassil (Fianna Fail) said the billboards were off-putting to tourists and the erection of black flags and posters on lampposts was upsetting for locals. Fine Gael TD Mr Jimmy Deenihan has also said they should be removed on the grounds that "Sinn Fein, like everyone else", should abide by litter and planning laws.
