Ms Sophie McColgan, who made legal history when she and her three siblings went public on the sexual abuse suffered at the hands of their father, has been nominated as one of the 1998 Outstanding Young Persons of the World.

She was nominated by Junior Chamber Ireland in association with Pepsi Cola International Cork in the field of legal, political/governmental affairs. The Joint Chamber international competition is run annually and each year more than 125 countries take part.

Ms McColgan will join Ms Pam Byrne, national president of Junior Chamber Ireland, in Manila in the Philippines in November, where she will collect her award and address the 7,000 members of Junior Chamber Worldwide.
