Seven people died in road accidents at the weekend in what the Garda has described as one of the worst weekends for fatalities in a long time.

The crashes bring to 289 the total number of people killed on the State's roads to date this year.

A 21-year-old man died and seven other people were injured shortly after midnight in a three-car collision at Gortroe, Killarney, Co Kerry.  He has been named by the Garda as Jos O'Brien of Ross, Keel, Castlemaine, Co Kerry.

In Galway, a man (39) died in a crash at Derrydonnell, Oranmore, on the Galway to Dublin road at around 11.30pm last night.  He has been named this evening as Michael Mongan, Sliabh Rua, Ballybane, Co Galway.

A man (20) died when his car hit a pole at Virginia, Co Cavan at 5.30am yesterday. A passenger in the car was taken to Navan hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.  Gardaí named him as Martin Friary of Tubrid, Oldcastle, Co Meath.

In Co Tipperary, a woman died following a two-car crash near Thurles at 1.30pm yesterday. Two cars collided near a bridge at Kilarha, between Thurles and Templemore. The dead woman was named as Monica O'Brien (43) from Patrickswell, Nenagh. Two other people were injured in that accident.

Elsewhere, Marie O'Sullivan (58) from Tullow, Co Carlow, died in hospital yesterday following a head-on crash at Rathvilly, Co Carlow, on Saturday afternoon.

Also on Saturday afternoon, Brendan McMahon (41), from Kildimo, Co Limerick, died when his car hit the wall of a house at Glenameade, Pallaskenry, Co Limerick. He was alone in the car at the time.

Gardaí renewed their appeal for witnesses to a hit-and-run in which a man was killed on Saturday night. Paul Fitzgerald (37), from Riversdale, Raharney, Co Westmeath, died when he was hit by a car just before 10pm at The Downs, Mullingar.

The car believed to have been involved was found by gardaí abandoned near the scene. No one has been arrested.

Mr Fitzgerald had been walking on the west-bound lane of the dual carriageway into Mullingar from the Dublin side.

Gardaí in Mullingar have asked motorists who travelled the road in the 90 minutes leading to the accident to contact them.
