Seven men have been remanded in custody after appearing before the courts to face charges in relation to the attempted robbery of almost €1 million from a cash-in-transit van in Co Kildare.
The men, from Dublin and Meath, were all charged at Kilmainham District Court, Dublin, yesterday with conspiracy to commit theft contrary to common law.
The charges relate to the alleged attempted robbery of €955,000 from an unmarked Chubb security vehicle in the car park of Tesco supermarket in Celbridge, Co Kildare, last Friday morning.
They are Michael Ryan (34), Carton Drive, Poppintree, Ballymun; Joseph Warren (25), Belclare Crescent, Ballymun; Darryl Caffrey (33), Cherrypark, River Valley, Swords; Jeffrey Morrow (25), Hazelcroft Road, Finglas; Wayne Bradley (28), Ratoath Road, Finglas; Eamon Dunne (31), Dunsoughly Drive, Finglas; Alan Bradley (33), with addresses at Churchfields, Kentstown, Co Meath, and Cappagh Road, Finglas.
Mr Caffrey, who was working as the driver of the Chubb vehicle targeted, was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court, Dublin, tomorrow. The other six men were remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court on Thursday.
All seven will be held at Cloverhill Prison, Clondalkin, Dublin, until their court appearances.
Mr Ryan applied for bail but his application was rejected by the court. The other six men made no application for bail.
The court heard Garda evidence about the charge and caution of the men at various Garda stations in Kildare and Dublin on Sunday morning. Garda witnesses said that in six of the cases, the men had nothing to say when the charges were put to them.
Mr Dunne was the only exception, saying "absolutely innocent" when the charge was put to him during his period of detention at Clondalkin Garda station at 11.20am on Sunday.
