The second Open Door series of books for adult literacy students was launched yesterday by the Minister for Education, Dr Woods. The series was compiled by some of Ireland's best-selling authors, including Marian Keyes, Gareth O'Callaghan, Joseph O'Connor, Anne Schulman, Peter Sheridan and Patricia Scanlan.
The authors worked voluntarily on the series and all royalties from Irish sales will be donated to charity.
"Literacy difficulties in adulthood can seriously affect the life choices and the quality of life of those who experience these difficulties," the Minister said.
However, with the expansion of adult literacy schemes and the development of support materials such as the Open Door series, attitudes were changing, he added.
