The second largest jackpot in the 13-year history of the National Lottery could be paid out this evening.
This afternoon the National Lottery recorded sales that push the jackpot to over £6 million. A spokesperson said the figure would "almost certainly" exceed £6.2 million record for the second highest jackpot.
The largest jackpot was in November 1996 when two winners shared £7,486,025. The second-largest was in May 1997 when one winner from Cork took home £6,216,048.
Saturday’s draw for over £5 million produced a highest pay-out of only £2,500 for three people.
The form guide shows that 11 is the number most often drawn - 144 times, while the least drawn number is 38 - just 95 times. Unlucky for some, number 13, has appeared 117 times since the first 42-ball Lotto draw in September 1994.
The advice from the National Lottery is to buy early with traders across the country reporting brisk trade. "Almost everyone in the country is going to be involved in this," the National Lottery spokesman said.
