A major air-and-sea search is under way off the coast of Cork for a crew member reported overboard from the luxury QE2 cruiseliner.

The man, an Indian national, was reported missing at 2.30 a.m.

An Aer Corps fisheries patrol aircraft has joined the search operation, which is being co-ordinated by the Falmouth coastguard. RAF Nimrod helicopters are also involved in the search about 280 miles southwest of Fastnet Rock.

The QE2 left New York a week ago and was one day from Southampton.
