Luiz Felipe Scolari, who has collected titles and criticism in equally large quantities throughout his career, todaybecame Brazil's third national team coach in less than a year.

Scolari, nicknamed Big Phil (Felipao) in Brazil, took over from Emerson Leao, who was sacked on Monday at Tokyo airport as he prepared to boarda flight home with the team after the Confederations Cup.

Scolari, whose appointment was announced by Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) president Ricardo Teixeira at a media conference in thecapital Brasilia, will be expected to revive the fortunes of the four times world champions.

Brazil have been hit by an unprecendeted run of bad results, the latest of which was a 1-0 defeat by Australia in the Confederations Cup onSaturday.
