The first salmon of 2007 was caught by Derek Jermyn on the Drowse River in Co Leitrim at 8.50am yesterday. Jermyn, who comes from Cavan, caught the 3kg fish on a Black Flying "C" in the eel pool on Lareen Estate, Kinlough, Co Leitrim.

Because of new legislation requiring the closure of many unsustainable rivers, the Drowse was the only river open for salmon fishing in Ireland on New Year's Day.

More than 200 anglers fished on the renowned spring river yesterday. Proceeds from the sale of fish will be donated to charity.
