MIDLAND motorists were faced with an unusual hazard yesterday when a pallet of mayonnaise toppled out of a lorry in the centre of Birr, Co Offaly.
Gallons of mayonnaise spilled from plastic containers and on to the street when the truck shed the pallet at a busy junction in the town at about 8am.
Gardaí in Birr confirmed “a lorry went through the junction at Townsend Street and Pound Street and basically the back doors were unsecured and so a pallet came out and smashed on the ground”.
The mayonnaise was “cleared quite quickly” by Birr Town Council officials, who used grit to counteract the slippery conditions, according to gardaí.
Guesthouse owner Martin Kearns of Townsend House said there was little disruption as a result of the spill.
“There was council work going on. The temporary traffic lights were there anyway, so people were waiting in traffic with them.”
The lorry driver called the guesthouse following the incident, said Mr Kearns.
“He rang up and he just was apologetic over causing any disservice to local businesses.”
