An inquest jury recommended last night that Dublin Bus review the safety of doors on its bus fleet after the death of an elderly passenger who fell through the middle door exiting system at a roundabout.
Dublin Coroners Court was told that Mr John Cunningham (71), of Beneavin Park, Glasnevin, Dublin, came down the stairs of a 19A bus at Glasnevin Avenue roundabout on February 11th. While holding a rail on the ground floor, he hit the left side of the central doors. One of them suddenly opened and he was thrown onto the road.
Mr Niall Henderson, a passenger, said Mr Cunningham appeared to lose his footing on the second-last step of the bus stairwell. He virtually "flew out" the middle door head first and hit the edge of a kerb.
