Ryanair said today it plans to start a High Court appeal against the Irish aviation regulator's decision to allow a 50 per cent increase in charges for check-in desks at Dublin Airport.

In a statement today Ryanair said that the increases mean the regulator is in breach of his duties to "protect the reasonable interests" of passengers.

The statement said that the proposed changes were "more than 10 times the rate of inflation".

Ryanair ceo Michael O'Leary used the announcement of the legal challenge as an opportunity to sharply criticise the economic record of outgoing Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.

He said the country has had a "clown for Taoiseach" for the last ten years and claimed that Mr Ahern had been a "disaster" for the Irish economy.
